‘UNESCO Six’ Exhibition

State Library of New South Wales   |   Country: Australia   |   Year: 2018

As part of the $22-million transformation of The State Library of New South Wales historic Mitchell Building, the exhibition ‘UNESCO Six’ opened in early October 2018.

With this exciting temporary exhibition, the Library’s UNESCO World Heritage collections are displayed together for the very first time. These items of international significance include an unrivalled collection of First Fleet journals, personal diaries from the First World War and the world’s largest surviving glass-plate negatives of Sydney Harbour taken in 1875.

UNESCO Six gives us an opportunity to see a range of original documents that mark significant points in our development as a nation.

The versatility of the exhibition design and arrangement allows for the collections to come to life, carefully factoring in aspects such as collections care; sustainability and economy; learning; practicality of furniture and cases; visitor flow and inclusive visitor experience in a functional, yet elegantly presented package.

Through UNESCO Six, the display and interpretation of collections included on the UNESCO Memory of the World register is a great source of pride for the Library. It highlights their deserved reputation as custodians of one of the most valuable library collections in Australia and in the world. Visibility of a greater number of the Library’s collections through exhibitions such as UNESCO Six promote the institution’s ability and dedication to preserving and interpreting culture and heritage, now in new and beautiful spaces for all to see and enjoy.
